Poor UI Design Decisions
This one comes from the TurboTax website. This is a module in the sidebar when you’re logged in. I wanted to get back to this area to get a couple of full-context screenshots, but I couldn’t figure out how to get there again.
Anyway, this module is a list of “Help” sections for members of the site. But look at the text of the links:
And then a link for getting more help.
Every time I visited this page, I immediately clicked “Update your account”, thinking I would get to a screen to… that’s right, update my account. Instead, I got a help page with a screenshot of where I should have clicked. This is a poor design.
Some of you might point out that the title bar says “Membership Help” and the links are preluded with “How to…”. Yet somehow, I missed this every time. I scanned the links and their verbs, expecting to get the relevant pages for taking action.
As it turns out, the actual menu for these actions is in the banner area above the content of the membership page. I missed that box because my brain dismissed that entire area due to banner blindness.
My suggestion is to make these links go to their action pages, not help documents. The “Get More Help” link should just be “Help” and that should go to a help section.
